Montjean is, as its name suggests, on the Loire, and is situated 30kms downstream from Angers. It is well known for hemp production and has an annual festival every August to celebrate the growing of hemp. Folk musicians come from all over the world to perform at the festival, which culminates in a spectacular firework display on the banks of the Loire.
The river dominated trade for centuries with the locally famous gabare being the working boat of the area. A number of industries grew up around the river and Montjean is now a centre for water activities. These include boat trips, swimming, though not in the river, canoeing and fishing. Montjean is also a centre for crafts like pottery.
A number of wine growers in the area produce wines of the Anjou Appellation Contrôlée quality.
